Understanding point spreads is the first step in learning more about sports betting. The majority of people find betting terminology fascinating, but they don’t understand what the terms mean. We will now explain the point spread and then we can get into sports betting.
What is a point spread?
Two teams are always playing in a basketball or football match 2up app. These teams are not always evenly matched, so one of them will usually have more chances to win the match than the other. The smartest bettors, if they were allowed to place bets on which team would win the game in question, would bet the more successful team. This would result in a win rate of over 50%.
Las Vegas would not accept any wagers if winning was so easy! The point spread is used to balance the odds of each team winning. Point spreads are used to balance out the chances of winning for each team by multiplying the score of the game by the spread. The Against the Spread (ATS) result is the result after this adjustment.
What is the point spread?
New York Giants 7 vs. Philadelphia Eagles
It is assumed that the better team (the Favorite) will win and therefore must lay or give points to the inferior team. A minus sign is placed next to the team’s number of points and the favorite.
For Eagles bettors, the New York Giants have to win by at least 7 points in the example above. A Eagles bet will pay off if Philly beats Philadelphia by a certain number of points, or if Philly loses by less than seven points.
The final score may also land on the exact spread (example, the Eagles won 28-21 at -7), which would be called a “push” or “no action”. Bettors of both teams will receive a refund.
From the perspective of the Underdog, the Eagles (in our example), the Underdog isn’t expected to win and so receives points from the stronger team. The Underdogs are listed as a team with an ‘+7’ sign and the amount of points that they have been underdogs (example: Eagles – 7 vs. New York Giants).
It is important to note that the point spread for the game between New York and Philadelphia is -7.
Mathematics Conclusions
Some people find a mathematical method helpful. The ATS can be determined by subtracting the points spread from the favorite score (the minus symbol before the number), and comparing it with the underdogs’ score. You can also add the point spread (a plus sign) to the scores of the underdogs and compare it to the favorite score.
